Retractable Awnings

Retractable Awnings 101:

Q: I’m interesting in having a retractable awning installed on my home, but I don’t know where to start.
What are the basics I need to know?

A: Retractable awnings are a great choice for providing shade and defining an outdoor space. Sunbrella shade fabrics are available in myriad of colors allowing you to showcase your style and coordinate your awning with your outdoor furniture, accessories and garden.

American Awning is an authorized dealer of dynamic shade products and a trusted partner to Glen Raven Custom Fabrics. We tapped into this resource for a few tips to help guide you through your retractable awning purchase:

• The direction your home faces can tell you a lot about your shade needs. If you need shade all day long in your outdoor living space, your house faces south and needs a wider width shade solution. If you only need shaded protection from the sun during the afternoon and evening, your house faces west and needs a shade solution that extends farther out from the house.

• Even if you have a large deck or patio, remember you don’t need to cover the entire space. We suggest you consider your home’s architectural features or the set of furniture you’re hoping to cover to determine your shade need.
• Solair awnings are installed by trained professionals, and can usually be installed within two hours. Depending on the architecture of the home, an awning can be installed in one of three ways: a wall mount, a roof mount or a soffit mount.
• The most important factor in determining placement on your home is mounting height. The higher you can mount the awning, the more options you have for the slope, or pitch of the awning. We recommend a mounting height of at least 8.5 feet. If your wall space or soffit will not accommodate 8.5 feet mounting height, you should consider a roof mount.
